Levi sighed as his email dinged on his phone, interrupting his early morning reading. He didn’t feel the pull of sleep today, not yet, but his mind wouldn’t let him focus on anything but Samuel and the heart that he burned in the fireplace.

The text notification sounded a few seconds after the email. He sighed and put his bookmark in and set the book down.

The notification was from Grayson. “Sent you more files to look over.”

Levi pulled himself out of the chair in his study and walked to his office, starting up the computer. There, he found the emails from Grayson with files attached.

The crime scene was the first one.

Levi opened the zipped file and went through the images. These differed from the vampire attack ones. These showed people torn apart in magical circles.

He looked at the notes.

Same scent, same prints, different method.

A hybrid. It had to be.

Levi clicked to the next e-mail. This one had the details of the prints and the DNA samples collected. There was no match in any database, but their IT person found a match at a blood bank that linked back to…

Calico Research.

Fuck. This person was a hybrid. One that survived.

Levi pressed his lips together and tried to figure out how he wanted to approach this. King or territory leader, either way there would be a shit storm if the media got a hold of this.

Levi reached for his phone. “Next scene that shows up. Call me.” He wanted to see this firsthand.

“We have a suspect, as you saw in the Calico files. Hoping to track her down quickly.”

“I still want to see the next scene.”

“Yes, sir.”

“We need to keep the nature of this away from the media. Let Abigail know that you have confirmed your suspicion.”

Grayson let out a huff. “With all dear respect, Abigail made it pretty clear that she was done on this case.”

Levi sighed. “She’s not happy with your methods.”

“Perhaps she should get used to more morally gray methods if she’s going to work on cases for you.” Grayson hung up, and Levi pressed the heel of his hand to his head.

The problem with vampires was humanity and morals were things of the past, if they let them be. Grayson wasn’t a particularly a moral person when he was human, so there were very few morals to save as a vampire.

Daybreak was coming, and sleep sounded wonderful.
